Technical masterpiece: the new Corvette ZR1 is launched with ventilation grilles from Graepel

Chevrolet has unleashed the 2025 Corvette ZR1 – the fastest and most powerful Corvette ever, with impressive technical data and an iconic design. The Corvette ZR1 is an engineering triumph and features a V8 engine that delivers 1,064 hp. To ensure that such a powerful engine can perform to its full potential, specific aerodynamic and cooling solutions are necessary. Numerous innovations were developed for the Corvette ZR1, including the specially designed, perforated ventilation grilles, which are manufactured by Graepel and make a significant contribution to the vehicle's performance.

Precision in design and aerodynamic efficiency

In a press release, Chevrolet describes the engine as the result of technical masterstrokes and counts the completely new ventilation system as well as the special outlet and inlet channels among its highlights. Graepel played a key role here and worked closely with Chevrolet to ensure optimal air circulation for effective cooling of the high-performance engine. The Corvette ZR1 is equipped with a completely new hood with a precisely manufactured ventilation grille made of sheet metal. The tolerances of this grille are as fine as a human hair. Graepel also contributes the side vents at the rear, as well as five bumper grilles and exhaust tips, which were adopted from the Corvette Z06 model.

The hood with the integrated air outlet contributes to the Corvette ZR1 dramatic body lines and, more importantly, enhances cooling and front downforce. The new charge air cooler with a flow-through hood and spoiler cools the turbocharged air. Fresh air Fresh air enters through the front grille, passes through the intercooler heat exchanger and exits through the opening in the bonnet to lower the charge air temperature and dissipate airflow. The front splitter, combined with a spoiler and a smooth underbody, creates suction under the vehicle to maximise downforce and reduce drag.

Integration of form and function

In addition, unique carbon-fibre air intakes are integrated into the top of the coupé's rear lid. These draw in fresh air to lower the intake air temperature of the turbo compressor. These design decisions, together with the strategic placement of the perforated ventilation panels, optimise the car's aerodynamic profile and make it a true racing machine.

While each ventilation grille serves a specific functional purpose, they also contribute to the distinctive design of the vehicle. The hood with the integrated ventilation grille is an eye-catching design element that seamlessly integrates into the aesthetics of the Corvette ZR1 while ensuring outstanding performance. Michael Hugenberg, head of Project Management at Graepel North America, is enthusiastic: “The design of the ventilation grilles of the Corvette ZR1 is a perfect blend of aesthetics, cooling function and precision engineering. At Graepel, we are very proud to be part of this American super sports car icon!”

Graepel's high-quality sheet metal products are renowned for their top quality in terms of function and design. The ventilation grilles from the long-established company, based in the Oldenburg region of Münsterland, feature a bionic honeycomb structure that provides a large free cross-section while also offering maximum structural strength. The resulting lightweight product offers decisive advantages for the automotive industry. That is why many well-known sports car manufacturers rely on Graepel, one of the oldest manufacturers in the industry, for their engine ventilation. The company, which has been a supplier for all types of vehicles for over 130 years, operates sites in Germany, the USA, India and Hungary near to its international customers.

Graepel at the International Suppliers Fair IZB 2024

Graepel will exhibit at the International Suppliers Fair (IZB) in Wolfsburg from 22 to 24 October 2024. The focus will be on the topics of engineering, prototyping, series production and surface technology. The specialists for extremely efficient ventilation grilles and other high-quality product solutions made of sheet metal will be available for discussions and presentations at the “European High-Tech Pavilion” in Hall 3.
